At Stout, our mission is to continually push the boundaries of creative thought, expand the definition of design, and find balance between what is beautiful and what works.
Our approach is deliberate, yet intuitive. We’re willing to take creative risks, but we like to do things smart. We’re experienced, yet always learning. We do not create work to win awards, but we still manage to win them. Some might say that we are fraught with contradictions. We prefer to think of it as giving our clients the best of all worlds.
Stout is a newly formed studio led by Brian Gunderson and Ryan Meis. Visual thinkers from design and illustration backgrounds, they applied their craft in leading advertising agencies, learning the art of story from some of the best people in the business.
Whether it’s through art direction, design or illustration, they both aspire to create work that is distinctive and compelling. This common thread has brought them together and now propels them forward.
Brian began his career at Templin Brink Design in San Francisco where he played an integral role in setting the tone of this influential studio. While there, he created work for a very diverse clientele including Oracle, Target, and Apple. He then moved to Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, directing creative and heading up design for Hewlett Packard, Netflix & Haagen Dazs to name a few. More recently, Brian was a founding creative of Mullen San Francisco, helping it grow while working on Google, JetBlue, and Grey Goose. Outside the studio, you’ll find Brian spending time with his family or on a road bike somewhere in the Marin Headlands.
Ryan began his career at Hatch Design in San Francisco, working with clients such as Coca-Cola, Starbucks, and Apple. He then became an Art Director at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners and for 2 years lead the design efforts for Hewlett Packard. In 2007, he and his wife Sarah founded Lab Partners, an illustration studio based in Oakland. For the past six years they have created work for a wide range of national and international clients. Born in Japan, Ryan spent his childhood traveling all around the world, living in places like The Netherlands, Germany, and Hawaii. To this day he remains passionate about traveling, and during his downtime you might find he and his wife exploring a new locale or hanging out at home with their three cats.
